An epic mountain biking adventure through the Japanese Alps. Five days of riding take you from Japan's largest trail network at Trailcutter Ina — 90km of flowing bumps and berms carved from ancient ancestral paths — to the 16 downhill tracks of Fujimi Panorama, the hero dirt of Fujiten at the base of Mount Fuji and the varied trails of Hakuba Iwatake. Includes a traditional onsen bath, a farewell dinner and evenings at a family-run pension.

Schedule

Day 1:
Arrive in Tokyo early morning. Assemble bikes and drive 5 hours to Fujimi area in the Japanese Alps. Check-in to Yamaji Pension – our base in Fujimi. Welcome dinner and an early bed.
Day 2:
Travel to Ina for Japan's largest trail network with Trailcutter. Spanning 90km on 10 private tracks, the village's ancient ancestral paths are transformed into flowing lines of bumps & berms. Return to Yamaji Pension.
Day 3:
Rip the many downhill trails at Fujimi Panorama MTB Park, Japan's largest bike park. Gondola rides whisk you up to the summit @ 1,780m, before descending 16 downhill tracks, the longest being 8 kilometres. Another night in Yamaji Pension.
Day 4:
Located at the northern base of Mount Fuji, Mountain Bike Park Fujiten is a fun, compact bike park with 8 trails (including Naughty Boy and Little Whistler) renowned for its hero dirt - rich black volcanic soil. Stay in Yamaji Pension.
Day 5:
A 2 hour drive takes us to Hakuba Iwatake MTB Park, where we explore 5 varied trails - including 2 exhilarating downhill runs. Apres-biking, it's time to unwind in true Japanese style with an onsen bath before bed in our Hakuba lodge, the Silkwood Hotel.
Day 6:
We return to Fujimi Panorama Bike Park to ride the trails you missed the first time round. Pack the bikes before celebrating over a farewell dinner.
Day 7:
Early morning drive to Tokyo for your International departure.

Trip Details

What this means:

Terrain – On mellow trails and at a steady pace, you feel comfortable tackling singletrack that may include tight trees, muddy sections, loose rocks, and sand.

Obstacles – You can confidently roll over small features (a few inches high) such as roots, rocks, and minor drops, but you generally keep both wheels on the ground.

Bike Parks – If you’ve been to a bike park, you handle Green and Blue trails with ease and are willing to try Red trails. You roll obstacles smoothly but still prefer to keep both wheels on the ground.

Bike Skills – You’re confident applying these fundamental bike handling techniques on a variety of singletrack:

Shifting – You look ahead and shift in response to the terrain.
Descending – You descend confidently in a standing position, holding the pedals level and maintaining balance.
Speed Control and Braking – You use momentum to climb rolling terrain and are comfortable using both your front and back brakes when required.

As co-founder and inspiration behind Trailsurfers, Richard has spent 30 years exploring Asia's wildest terrain in search of its best singletrack, from humid jungles to high-altitude mountain passes. As a certified Level 1 Mountain Bike Coach (GSMBC) and Wilderness First Aider (NOLS), he is trained to handle the unexpected when the trail bites back. Having discovered mountain biking in the Surrey Hills, UK, during the early 90s, combining his passions for travel, cycling and the outdoors was inevitable. For Richard, MTB is the ultimate blend of fitness, technical skill and pure adventure. From local trail rides, to big bike park days and epic expeditions, Richard believes that any day on a bike is a good day.

Jamie Trott

Co-founder, Host & Guide | Singapore

Jamie is a Co-founder of Trailsurfers, where he manages our Singapore school programmes and serves as a lead guide for our young riders. He's spent over a decade exploring trails around the world, from the forests of Singapore to the mountains of Nepal and Switzerland, and is a certified Level 1 Mountain Bike Coach (GSMBC) and Wilderness First Aider (NOLS). For Jamie, the appeal of mountain biking is the mix of fitness, skill and adrenaline, plus the chance to spend time in nature. His preferred styles of riding are cross-country or enduro and he's also an occasional roadie. As well as coaching for Trailsurfers, he enjoys spending weekends guiding his own kids around the local trails.

This trip absolutely delivered in every sense of the word. Probably the best riding I've ever done overseas. The bike parks are pristine, incredibly well built, with amazing progression possibilities for all levels of rider. The ski style resorts with chairlift uplift are unbeatable luxury. We also experienced a really nice blend of cultural Japanese activities, not to mention delicious food every single day. I highly recommend this trip for anybody looking to explore Japan on two wheels.
